Okay, let’s be honest. Most of us probably only think about our vehicle when there is a problem. For example, our car gets dirty, so we wash it. We run low on fuel, so we think, “Ah! Where is the nearest gas station!”. Our car isn’t running right, our “check engine” light comes on, or we don’t pass smog and we realize, “We need a mechanic!”
Many of the vehicles that come into our shop are there due to a current problem. Most of the time it is a “noise or rattle” somewhere in the vehicle or a “check engine” light. We do a diagnostic, price parts and labor, obtain permission from our customer, get the parts and then fix the vehicle. Sometimes it’s a relatively quick and inexpensive fix. Other times, it is not so quick and inexpensive. And, of course, the issue usually occurs when our customer needs their vehicle most.
Vehicle parts brake or stop functioning properly due to normal wear and tear. That's just a fact of use. However, many times, proper vehicle maintenance could have prevented the problem, or kept a small issue from turning into a bigger one.
Every vehicle comes with an owner’s manual. Within that manual is a table of when that vehicle should be inspected / serviced. Usually, the table will state the vehicle needs an inspection every so many miles or when certain mileage markers are reached. The table will also state everything that should be checked and/or replaced at a certain mileage.
Following your vehicles service inspection table will save you time and money in the long run. By scheduling a time to do regular vehicle maintenance you may also help to ensure that the work is done on your own terms, not when something goes wrong at a most inconvenient time. Regular vehicle maintenance will also make your vehicle run better, run cleaner (which is better for the environment!) and last longer. It also may help your vehicle get better fuel economy.
Just the other day we had multiple vehicles towed into our shop for what boiled down to a lack of maintenance (i.e. tune-up / service inspections) causing big problems. One customer ran his engine out of oil thus damaging the engine block. Another customer had not done any maintenance AT ALL on his vehicle in over 80k miles and had a whole slew of issues ranging from burned out (and very poor quality) spark plugs and coils to blown out struts. Parts and labor on both of these scenarios was significant and could have been mostly avoided with proper vehicle maintenance.
If you do not have your owner’s manual for your vehicle with the service inspection tables, many can be found online. You can also give our shop a call or stop by Payless 4 Wheel Drive and Auto Center and we will print out the service inspection table for you.
If you are mechanically inclined, you might be able to do your vehicle’s next service yourself. We are happy to answer any questions you might have, recommend parts, etc. If you want to get your parts from us, great! Or, if mechanics is not your thing, ask us for a quote and we will be happy to schedule an appointment for you to take care of your service needs.
Just let us know how we can help!
